Can You Use SketchUp or CAD Models in a Furniture 3D Viewer?

By FurnishAR Team · 24 Oct 2026 · 4 min read

Yes, an existing SketchUp, CAD or rendering model can be a starting point for a furniture 3D product viewer. The useful question is how much preparation it needs. A file built for drawings or a still render may contain the right shape while needing changes to geometry, materials and product structure before it works well on a website.

You do not have to identify every technical issue before asking for a quote. Send a representative model, the product page, dimensions and the options you want to show. That gives us a basis for assessing preparation and integration instead of treating every product as a new modelling job.

Check the shape and scale before materials

Start with a model that represents the product you sell. Check the silhouette, legs, seat, joints and other visible details against reference photographs. Confirm the overall dimensions and units. A model that looks convincing in isolation can still have the wrong proportions or import at the wrong scale.

Look for duplicate surfaces, reversed faces and internal geometry that does not contribute to the visible product. Dense geometry can increase the amount of work needed, but polygon count alone does not determine loading performance. Textures and the final exported file also need checking.

Separate the parts that customers can change

A wooden frame and an upholstered seat need a useful material structure if buyers are going to choose them independently. One combined mesh is not automatically a problem, provided it preserves the material assignments needed for the experience. A file with one material covering everything usually needs more preparation.

List the actual choices before preparing the asset: wood stains, fabrics, metal finishes or alternative parts. A different finish may reuse the same geometry. A different seat shape or base may require another mesh. The quote should distinguish those changes rather than count every catalogue option as the same task.

Review UVs and texture references

Wood grain should follow the construction of the furniture. Fabric should have a believable weave size. Stretched mapping or inconsistent texture scale becomes obvious when someone rotates a product and looks at its sides or underside.

Existing colour textures can help establish the intended appearance, but they may not contain enough information to reproduce surface roughness or fine detail. Send the available texture files, finish names and reference images. Physical samples can help with matching when a project requires them, but their handling and any additional work should be agreed in the scope.

Export and test the final website asset

The prepared model is exported for the viewer workflow and checked again after export. That check should cover material assignments, dimensions, shading and texture references. The final experience also needs testing on the intended website and representative devices. Opening the source file successfully is only one part of delivery.

AR adds another acceptance check. Confirm that the supported phone workflow launches and shows the intended product. A successful desktop preview does not establish that every mobile AR path behaves identically, especially when materials or parts change.

A working example from our own demonstrations

Our independent C-4075 demonstration shows a wooden bar stool with separate upholstery and wood-finish choices. It is a demonstration of model preparation and interactive presentation, rather than a commissioned customer project or evidence of sales results. You can inspect the choices in the linked example.

What to send for a useful estimate

Send one source model with its textures, a product URL, dimensions and a list of the finishes or parts that buyers should be able to select. Include the website platform if known. If the original model is unavailable, send photographs and dimensions so we can assess creating it.

We can then separate the work into model creation or preparation, materials, configuration and website integration. You can also ask for model preparation alone. Platform hosting is a separate decision, with its own published plans.
